The asphaltic constituents of petroleum (i.e. the asphaltenes and resins) tend to exert the greatest influence on recovery and refining processes. The functional entities in these constituents can cause association with reservoir rock, with catalysts, and with each other. The properties of the asphaltenes and resins are discussed and the manner in which the asphaltic constituents can influence refining processes is noted.
