Addition of nanoclusters of alumina onto the surfaces of sheet aluminosilicates generates porous materials which are known as {open_quotes}pillared clays{close_quotes}. The permanent expansion of the aluminosilicate sheets which results introduces new surface properties which are reflected in sorption changes, acidity and catalytic performance. Acid activation is also used to modify the surface properties by selective removal of ions and the generation of new pores and protonic acid sites. The subsequent pillaring of acid activated clays leads to the production of materials with surface properties which show characteristics of both pillared and acid activated clays. Using porosimetry, thermal analysis and catalytic measurements we have attempted to measure how the surface structure is changed as a result of these modifications.
