BaCoS{sub 2} has been synthesized and characterized recently as being a Mott insulator with a two-dimensional structure, containing base-edge-sharing CoS{sub 5} square pyramids arranged up and down to make a sheet, with Ba above and below the vertices. This phase undergoes an antiferromagnetic ordering around 300 K. BaCoS{sub 2} can be chemically modified to take away electrons from the frontier band, thereby introducing Co mixed valency and perhaps changing the properties as well. The investigation underway is the substitution of Ba with K. The resulting Co{sup 3+} spin can now be 1/2, and thus the electronic states are analogous to those in the copper oxide superconductors. We present a structure analysis for the substituted phases and resistivity vs. temperature measurements.
