Title: The magnetic and electronic properties of Eu{sub 14}MnPn{sub 11} (M = Mn, In, Zn; Pn = P, As, Sb, Bi) compounds

Abstract

The Zintl compounds A{sub 14}MnPn{sub 11} (A=Ca, Sr, Ba; Pn=As,Sb,Bi) have been extensively studied and have shown interesting magnetic and electrical properties. In order to further explore this structure type and the electrical properties a series of rare earth Eu{sub 14}MPn{sub 11} (M=Mn, In, Zn; Pn=P, As, Sb, Bi) have been made. Single crystal x-ray diffraction of Eu{sub 14}MnSb{sub 11} shows that this compound is isostructural with the A{sub 14}MnPn{sub 11} compounds crystallizing in the tetragonal space group I4{sub 1}/acd. X-ray powder diffraction of the other compounds indicate that they also crystallize in the tetragonal space group I4{sub 1}/acd. Magnetic susceptibility measurements have been made and show that all of the compounds order magnetically, either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically. The magnetic susceptibility studies as well as electrical conductivity measurements of these compounds will be discussed, and compared to the alkaline earth analogs.
