Novel alkali metal lead germanium sulfides from molten alkali metal polysulfide flux synthesis
- Michigan State Univ., East Lansing, MI (United States)
The novel 3-D solid state compounds K{sub 2}Pb{sub 3}Ge{sub 3}S{sub 10}, K{sub 2}PbGe{sub 2}S{sub 6}, Rb{sub 2}PbGe{sub 2}S{sub 6}, and Cs{sub 4}Pb{sub 4}Ge{sub 5}S{sub 16} were synthesized by reacting lead, germanium, and alkali metal polysulfides, A{sub 2}S{sub x} (A=Na, K, Rb, Cs; x=6 to 12) in the temperature regime between 400 and 500{degrees}C. Three of these four compounds have unique structures which were determined through single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. In all cases, the alkali metal cartons are located in channels within the structures. K{sub 2}PbGe{sub 2}S{sub 6} and Rb{sub 2}PbGe{sub 2}S{sub 6} are isostructural and contain Ge{sub 2}S{sub 6}{sup 4-} fragments two edge-sharing GeS{sub 4} tetrahedral bridging six-coordinate lead atoms. Cs{sub 4}Pb{sub 4}Ge{sub 5}S{sub 16} contains Ge{sub 2}S{sub 6}{sup 4-} and tetrahedral GeS{sub 4}{sup 4-} fragments bridging six- and seven-coordinate lead atoms. K{sub 2}Pb{sub 3}Ge{sub 3}S{sub 10} contains Ge{sub 2}S{sub 6}{sup 4-} and GeS{sub 4}{sup 4-} fragments bridging six- and four-coordinate lead atoms. The structure and synthesis and the thermal, optical, and vibrational properties of these new compounds will be presented.
