Despite continued interest in layered transition metal pnictide and transition metal oxide compounds, many of which are known to exhibit interesting magnetic and electronic properties, the small class of layered transition metal pnictide oxide compounds has remained essentially unexplored. Among these compounds, the Sr{sub 2}Mn{sub 3}As{sub 2}O{sub 2} structure type has the unique feature of independent metal oxide and metal pnictide layers which form a 1:1 intergrowth. These {open_quotes}mixed layer{close_quotes} compounds have different metal geometries within the two layers and therefore have the potential to yield interesting properties and even tunable properties if the synthetic preparation of ordered mixed metal phases can be achieved. In an effort to develop an understanding of structure-property relationships among the compounds of this structure type, magnetic and electronic property measurements have been performed on A{sub 2}Mn{sub 3}Pn{sub 2}O{sub 2} (A=Sr, Ba; Pn=P, As, Sb) and neutron magnetic structures determined for the strontium derivatives. This data will be presented and discussed in light of structural trends in the series.
