A novel analytical method for the determination of picogram levels of mercury in gasoline and other petroleum based products has been developed. The organic mercury compounds in the material were oxidized while being extracted into the aqueous phase using an oxidant/acid solution, BrCl/HCl. The inorganic mercury was simultaneously extracted into the solution. The mercury extracted in the aqueous phase was then reduced into elemental mercury by SnCl{sub 2} and detected by CVAFS. The DL (3SDs) was about 0.01 ng/g. The recoveries close to 100% were obtained with RSDs less than 5% when determining mercury in a certified reference material, dithiocarbamate in jet fuel (Conoco Standard). Several products, gasoline, kerosene, diesel and heating oil from different suppliers have been collected and analyzed, and concentrations up to 3 ng/g were found. It is believed that with this method, the research and monitoring of mercury in these products as an important source of air pollutant will become of interest.
