NO{sub x} reduction by propane and methane over Cu and Co exchanged ZSM-5 catalysts has been studied. It is known that methane is nonselective over Cu/ZSM-5, but selective over Co/ZSM-5 catalysts. Adsorbed NO{sub y} groups (y{>=}2) which form in both systems under flowing NO, O{sub 2} and hydrocarbon are characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. The products of NO{sub y} reacting with propane and methane have been analyzed by mass spectrometry (MS). The spectroscopic signature and reactivity of NO{sub y} is different for Cu and Co containing ZSM-5. Cu and Co bonded NO{sub y} reacts with propane to form N{sub 2}, CO and H{sub 2}O as determined by MS analysis. However, whereas Co-NO{sub y} reacts with methane to form N{sub 2}. Cu-NO does not. The possible role of NO{sub y} in activating the hydrocarbon by H abstraction has been stated recently. In this paper, the structure and properties of NO{sub y} surface complexes with Cu and Co are discussed with respect to the hydrocarbon specificity of these catalysts.
