Mercury has been identified as an air toxic metal by the Environmental Protection Agency. Because of mercury`s toxicity, there has been a considerable amount of activity aimed at its relation and control. Significant sources of mercury emissions include fossil fuel combustion, municipal solid waste combustion, medical waste incineration, hazardous waste incineration, and the treatment of wastes generated by the DOE complex. One of the keys to effective control of mercury is the ability to monitor its concentration continuously and in real time. ADA Technologies has developed such a monitoring system. Because mercury is emitted from these sources in several chemical forms, provisions that allow for the measurement of mercury and mercury compounds have been incorporated in the CEM. The system will provide a number of advantages over existing test methods, including real-time measurement of both elemental and speciated mercury. The CEM will assure facility operators, regulators, and the public that emissions control systems are working at peak efficiency. The paper describes features of the analyzer and will present data from several field tests conducted during the summer of 1995.
