A principal goal of the DOE Biomass Power Program is the development of advanced, high efficiency power cycles, such as gasification-gas turbine systems. To protect turbines from particulate and alkali. hot gas cleanup (HGCU) technology is being developed. Westinghouse candle filter HGCU technology was tested at the 10 ton/day RENUGAS process development unit (PDU) at the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), in support of the 100 ton/day demonstration gasifier in Hawaii. Hawaiian bagasse feedstock was used for these tests. The test objective was not to optimize the PDU gasifier/HGCU system. Rather, the gasifier was operated at the 100 ton/day design conditions to obtain alkali, particulate, gas and liquid composition data throughout the process. The performance information obtained from these analyses will be used for HGCU system design optimization by Westinghouse. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory`s transportable molecular beam mass spectrometer (TMBMS) was interfaced with die IGT gasifier/Westinghouse HGCU system at three process sampling points. This paper will focus on the measurements of gasifier tars as well as instrument performance data.
