It is possible with AP-TPR to determine qualitatively as well quantitatively the different organic sulfur forms in coal. As the presence of pyrite and sulfates in coal samples might disturb the sulphur determination by AP-TPR, it is quite important to know their behaviour during the reduction process. This study represents an explanation for the behaviour of pyrite and iron sulfate subjected to a linear temperature increase up to 1000{degrees}C in an inert (TGA) as well as reductive, i.e, H{sub 2} atmosphere (AP-TPR). There fore the coal-derived pyrite, its conversion products, i.e. pyrrhotite (Fe{sub 10}S{sub 11}), troillite (FeS) and iron sulphate (FeSO{sub 4} {sm_bullet} 7 H{sub 2}O) are studied with these techniques. Using DTA and TGA coupled with MS, together with AP-TPR enabled us to formulate the mechanism behind the pyrite-chemistry in reducing experimental conditions as used in the AP-TPR-experiments.
