The overall objective of the Proof-of-Concept Program is to develop direct and liquefaction and associated transitional technologies towards commercial readiness for economically producing premium liquid fuels from coal in an environmentally acceptable manner. POC Run No. 1 had as its main objective to scale-up and to demonstrate the catalytic TSL process with extinction recycle operations, while processing Illinois No. 6 Crown II Mine Coal using Akzo AO-60 catalyst in both stages. The activity of the catalysts recovered from each of the liquefaction stages were compared with a presulfided reference catalyst using a microautoclave system. It was found that first stage catalysts were generally more active than the second stage catalysts by an average of 10%, despite the lower catalysts replacement rate to the first stages by a factor of 1/2.
