The polymer MEEP[NP(OCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}OCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}OCH){sub 2}]{sub n} has proved to be one of the most effective solid polymeric ionic conduction media, and has been incorporated into a variety of experimental rechargeable lithium batteries. Attempts have now been made to overcome the few shortcomings of MEEP by the rational design and synthesis of 20 new polymers based on a phosphazene backbone with a variety of alkyl ether side groups. The behaviour of these polymers as ionic conduction media will be discussed.
