A proposal was made to pump an Xe-NaCl mixture by a hard ioniser with the aim of constructing a highly efficient XeCl lamp (308 nm). Under optimal conditions (pressure {approx}10 Torr, specific input energy {approx}60 - 125 W cm{sup -3} , mixture composition Xe : NaCl = 20 : 1) the efficiency of the active medium of this lamp reached 40% and the energy yield was 0.025 J litre{sup -1} . Under these conditions the gain was low (less than 10{sup -4} cm{sup -1}). (laser applications and other topics in quantum electronics)
