Calculation of the vibrational temperatures and populations of the laser-active levels of CO{sub 2} from the spectral distribution of the gain

The gains measured at the centres of vibrational - rotational lines of the main bands of the CO{sub 2} molecule were used to determine, by the least-squares method, the populations of the laser-active levels and the vibrational temperatures of the active medium of a cw electric-discharge CO{sub 2} laser.
