CeraMem Corporation is developing a new patented filter technology for air pollution control. The filter is composed of a cordierite honeycomb monolith coated with a microfiltration membrane which is then configured to give a flow-through, dead-ended filter by plugging alternate passageways on both ends of the honeycomb. The membrane coating results in filtration efficiencies of > 99.9% for particulates in gas streams. Particulates are filtered out on the membrane surface, instead of within the wall thickness, thereby allowing the removal of the filter cake by gas backpulsing down the clean-side passageways. The membrane coating is thin and very permeable resulting in filter gas flow pressure drops comparable to fabric bag filters. The monolith design creates a high packing density filter (up to 155 ft{sup 2}/ft{sup 3} as compared to bag filters at < 10 ft{sup 2}/ft{sup 3}) which minimizes system hardware costs through smaller systems. These attributes make this a very promising technology for applications such as filtration of flue gases from traditional combustion systems and hot gases from advanced coal conversion technologies.
