The paper presents results of development and analysis of numerical models of radioactive contamination spreading from the site of old radwaste repositories at the Russian Research Centre (RRC) 'Kurchatov Institute' (Moscow, Russia). Since 2002 to the present day remediation activities have been conducted at Kurchatov Institute at the site of old radwaste repositories constructed in the 1940's-1960's. The main objective of the remediation activities consists in disposition of the old repositories and decontamination of soil at the site. Preliminary investigations conducted at the radwaste disposal site and adjacent areas in the late 1980's - early 1990's have shown that radioactive contamination is present not only in the soil at the site but also tends to spread into groundwater. That is why concurrently with remediation operations at the radwaste disposal site, the following activities have been started: regular monitoring of groundwater condition, detailed soil contamination survey, analysis of hydrogeological features of the site. Numerical modeling activities were aimed at evaluation of the existing contamination plume, investigation of possible contaminant migration mechanisms on the site, and development of numerical models for predicting possible further contamination spreading. These works include development of three-dimensional numerical models of groundwater flow and mass transport on the basis of different specialized hydrogeological software. The paper describes specific features of the three-dimensional numerical groundwater flow and mass transport models developed for particular conditions of the radwaste disposal site, as well as those of the two-dimensional numerical model of radioactive contamination transfer in soil. It also presents predictions of radioactive contamination spreading from the radwaste disposal site for the period up to 2030 obtained with the developed numerical models for a number of alternative scenarios of remediation activities at the site.
