A test stand for the proof of principle experiments of He{sup 0} beam production has been constructed aiming at development of an alpha particle diagnostic system in next generation fusion reactors. The characteristics of a He{sup -} beam produced in Lithium vapor has been studied. With an increase in the vapor pressure in the cell, mitigation of space charge in a He{sup +} beam and bunching of a He{sup -} beam which travels part of the way with the He{sup +} beam have been observed.
