The HERA magnetron is based on a design from FNAL. This technology was developed at the INP in the 70 s, transferred to BNL and from there to FNAL. The DESY magnetron was modified according to the requirements of the HERA collider. During the first years it was the only source connected to the H{sup -} LINAC. It was necessary to run the source for long uninterrupted periods with a high reliability and fortunately with a low duty cycle. Many improvements in the design were made, including the development of a vacuum module which could be changed in minutes, the addition of internal cathode heating, and cathode grooving. To study the influence of the cathode temperature a set-up with air temperature stabilization of the cathode was developed. The cesium consumption could be significantly reduced. The source has now been running without cleaning for more than two and a half years after a fine tuning of all parameters.
