Title: Lifetime measurements using the CLARA-PRISMA setup around the {sup 48}Ca doubly-magic nucleus

Abstract

The lifetimes of the first excited states of nuclei around the doubly-magic nucleus {sup 48}Ca have been determined using a novel method that combines the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method with the CLARA-PRISMA spectrometers. This is the first time such a method is applied to measure lifetimes of neutron-rich nuclei populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction. This novel method and some preliminary results on lifetimes are presented.

  • {gamma} spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei around {sup 48}Ca is performed by the heavy-ion transfer reaction {sup 48}Ca on {sup 64}Ni at 282 MeV, with the PRISMA-CLARA setup at Legnaro Laboratory. Angular distributions, polarizations and lifetimes analysis probe spin and parities of several excited states, shading lights on their configuration. In the one neutron transfer channels, {sup 49}Ca and {sup 47}Ca, states arising by coupling a single particle to the 3{sup -} phonon of {sup 48}Ca are observed, showing the robustness of nuclear collectivity in rather light systems. The work demonstrates the feasibility of complete in-beam {gamma}-spectroscopy with heavy-ion transfer reactionsmore » and provides a method that can be further exploited in the future with heavy targets and radioactive beams.« less
  • Since the discovery of the breakdown of shell effects in very neutron-rich N=20 and 28 nuclei, studies of the properties of nuclei far from stability have been of intense interest since they provide a unique opportunity to increase our understanding of nuclear interactions in extreme conditions and often challenge our theoretical models.Deep-inelastic processes can be used to populated high spin states of neutron-rich nuclei. In the deep-inelastic processes, an equilibration in N/Z between the target and projectile nuclei is achieved. For most heavy neutron-rich target nuclei, the N/Z ratio is 1.5 - 1.6, while for the possible neutron-rich sdf-shell projectilemore » it is about 1.2. Thus by using deep-inelastic processes one can populate neutron-rich nuclei around N=20 and N=28.New results for the spectroscopy of neutron-rich N=22 36Si and 37P are presented here.« less
  • Properties of proton-rich nuclei around doubly magic {sub 28}{sup 48}Ni{sub 20} are studied in the framework of the self-consistent mean-field theory (Hartree-Fock, Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov, and relativistic mean field). Various effective interactions are employed to investigate two-proton separation energies, deformations, single-particle levels, proton average potentials, and diproton partial decay half-lives in this mass region. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
  • Isotonic and isotopic dependences of single-particle energies of neutron and proton states in 20 {<=} Z {<=} 28 and 24 {<=} N {<=} 32 nuclei are investigated, these energies being determined by matching data on nucleon-stripping and nucleon-pickup reactions on the same nucleus. Regularities of the formation of the spectra of single-particle levels in Z, N = 20, 28 magic nuclei are demonstrated. A distinctive feature is found in the isotonic dependence of the energy of the 1 f{sub 5/2} neutron level, this feature being consistent with the assumption that j{sub >}-j{sub <} interaction is operative in nuclei. The single-particlemore » energies calculated by using the potential of the dispersive optical model are found to be consistent with experimental data within their errors.« less
