The (Y{sub 0.94-x-y}Al{sub x}Gd{sub y}Eu{sub 0.06})BO{sub 3} (0 {<=} x {<=} 0.04 and 0 {<=} y {<=}0.4) phosphors were single-phase with a hexagonal vaterite crystal structure. The (Y{sub 0.94-x-y}Al{sub x}Gd{sub y}Eu{sub 0.06})BO{sub 3} phosphor powders showed smooth, regular, and spherical morphology. The emission intensity of the Al- and Gd-co-doped (Y{sub 0.74-x}Al{sub x}Gd{sub 0.2}Eu{sub 0.06})BO{sub 3} and (Y{sub 0.925-y}Al{sub 0.015}Gd{sub y}Eu{sub 0.06})BO{sub 3} phosphors was much higher than that of Al-free (Y{sub 0.74}Gd{sub 0.2}Eu{sub 0.06})BO{sub 3} and Gd-free (Y{sub 0.925}Al{sub 0.015}Eu{sub 0.06})BO{sub 3} phosphors, respectively. This means that the simultaneous addition of Gd and Al to yttrium borates was desirable for improving their photoluminescent properties.
