The intent of this paper is to illustrate how ecological risk assessment (ERA) can and is being used in Canada for a number of purposes. In general, the field of ecological risk assessment (ERA) has focused on evaluation and management of contaminated sites. This paper will evaluate the role of ERA in contaminated sites, but also cover other scientifically-based functions. To illustrate key points, case examples will be featured, such as: ERA in support of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), comparative risk assessment to rank environmental problems, the function of ERA in the National Contaminated Sites Remediation Program, and ERA in provincial contaminated sites regulations. Where possible, the Canadian approach will be compared to that used in other jurisdictions. Finally, potential directions and applications for ERA in Canada will be discussed.
