In consideration of revolutionary importance of CPA lasers and their potential applications in a broad range of science and technology, a research program called 'Advanced Photon Research' has been launched at JAERI by the Science and Technology Agency. The program includes the development of repetitive ultra-short pulse Ti:sapphire laser with the highest peak power and the shortest pulse duration and also high repetition rate Ti:sapphire laser systems. Presently 10 Hz generation of 9.6 TW peak power in 16.6 fs pulse duration was demonstrated, and it is expected to be up-graded to 100 TW, 20 fs, 10 Hz system before the end of 1997. Those laser systems will be used in the researches on the x-ray lasers, and also in the basic study of laser acceleration. Other applications of CPA lasers and x-ray lasers in various field of science and technology are also included in the scope of the present program.
