Very high energy (VHE) {gamma}-ray astronomy (E>250 GeV) has, in recent years, established its place as an astrophysical discipline. The growing catalog of galactic and extragalactic sources, and the non-detection of prominent astrophysical objects, have impacted theories ranging from the environments of pulsars and active galactic nuclei (AGN) to the origins of cosmic rays. The current status of the field is reviewed, with particular emphasis on observations of AGN and their implications for AGN emission models.
