New UA8 results on hard-diffraction and inclusive single-diffraction

In fits to UA8 and ISR differential cross sections of inclusive single diffraction, we have obtained the parameter, K{sigma}{sub 0}=0.72{+-}0.10 mb GeV{sup -2}, where K is the unknown normalization constant of the Pomeron Flux Factor in the proton and {sigma}{sub 0} is the constant in the Pomeron-proton total cross section at high energies, {sigma}{sub 0}(s{sup '}){sup e}. We also find that, at high t, the data require a quadratic term in the Pomeron Regge trajectory, with coefficient {alpha}{sup ''}=0.079{+-}0.012 GeV{sup -2}. From measurements of the ratio of hard-diffractive dijet to total inclusive single-diffractive cross sections in UA8, we have obtained measurements of f/{sigma}{sub 0}, where f is the fraction by which the Pomeron momentum sum rule is violated. Their product with K{sigma}{sub 0} given above yields the quantity, fK, which is 0.28{+-}0.08{+-}0.08 GeV{sup -2} for a hard gluonic Pomeron and 0.53{+-}0.16{+-}0.16 GeV{sup -2} for a hard qq-bar Pomeron. Finally, we have shown that the available differential cross section data do not require an s-dependent K. Alternatively, the observed flattening of the total inclusive single diffractive cross section at large s is obtained with a ''toy model'', in which damping or suppression of low Pomeron momenta is introduced in the Flux Factor.
