Comparing the recent results of the highest fusion gains with direct and indirect drive from Rochester, Osaka and Arzamas-16, the results are well reproduced by the self similarity model of nearly ideal adiabatic compression. Measurements with high shock wave generation do not fit the model as is explained by the high deviation from the isentropic conditions of the adiabats of the self similarity model. The conclusion for higher input energy results in volume ignition developed since 1977 by numerous teams with very high net fusion gains close to those from spark ignition. Self similarity volume ignition computations are checked by different codes and compared. This seems to be a new computational access for formulating conditions in the NIF range which rather easily could be covered by direct drive using the stagnation-free laser compression well experienced at ILE Osaka, but may be valid also for indirect drive with less complex laser irradiation profiles.
