The solvatochromism of the fluorescence of two biaryl donor acceptor compounds (4-dimethylamino-4'cyanobiphenyl, DMACNB and 4-dimethylanilino-1-cyano-naphthalene, DMACNN) have been studied in 1-propanol and 1-hexanol solutions with a 30 picosecond resolution. The time dependence of the spectral redshift has shown that the intramolecular charge transfer process in the excited state is controlled by the dynamics of solvation. A large decrease of the integrated emission intensity in a 200 ps time scale in 1-hexanol solution has been observed in the case of DMACNN while this effect was not significant in the case of DMACNB. This difference has been related to the evolution of CT character of the excited state due to a more twisted conformation.
