Solar energetic particles can be used as probes for the turbulence level in the interplanetary medium. We discuss various methods by which the scattering conditions can be determined, (a) overall fits of observed particle intensities and anisotropies to a transport model, (b) evaluation of the steady-state pitch angle distribution, (c) suitably normalized angular distributions during the intensity maximum of a particle event. Results from solar particle events observed on HELIOS 1 and 2 show that the global mean free paths determined by usage of methods (a) and (b) agree well with each other. Large variations in the degree of scattering exist from one event to the other. The assumption {lambda}{sub r}(r)=const underlying the derivation of a global mean free path will have to be modified.
