Some considerations on signal detection and signal to noise ratio in laser enhanced ionization spectroscopy

An attempt is made here to illustrate the relevance of several parameters in conventional flame ionization experiments. The difference between current measurement and charge measurement and the role of the stray circuit capacitance are stressed. Some optimized examples of the minimum number of atoms detectable are presented.
