Energy-Efficient Office Technology 1994: An International Seminar held from October 17--19, 1994, in New York City was planned with the goal of disseminating information on international efforts to make more energy-efficient office automation equipment a part of the modern business environment. This seminar was one of the follow-up activities to the Energy-Efficient Office Technologies Workshop held in San Jose, California, in 1992 and sponsored by the same Office Technology Efficiency Consortium. The consumption of electricity in the office environment has increased dramatically since the advent of the desktop personal computer for the mass market. During the same period, other office automation equipment, such as facsimile machines (faxes) and convenience copiers, has also proliferated, contributing to a dramatic increase in plug loads. Participants in the seminar heard presentations from speakers from the United States, Canada, and Europe on technologies and policies to reduce demand and energy use by these office technologies. More complete statistics on power consumption by office equipment are being gathered to heighten awareness among end users and to facilitate better designs for new office space. The collaboration of manufacturers, customers, and energy suppliers across international boundaries is critical to identify and implement mechanisms to improve energy performance in the commercial office environment.
