New modes of operation of an ion trap mass spectrometer

The ion trajectory simulation program, ITSIM, has been used to investigate the use of quadrupolar dc pulses to manipulate the ion cloud in an ion trap mass spectrometer. Properly timed dc pulses can be used to optimize the shape and position of the cloud for different experiments. Manipulation of the ion cloud is important in photodissociation and in high-resolution experiments because the performance is dependent on the exact location of the ion cloud. Simulated data for both of these experiments are presented, as are experimental data for the photodissociation experiment.
