The combination of electrospray (ES) technique with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS or simply FTMS) has distinct advantages for the analysis of biomolecules, including high analysis speed, high resolution and wide mass range. This report is the first demonstration of combining ES with FTMS using an electrostatic ion guide (EIG). This approach to the combination of ES and FTMS is designing and constructing a perforated EIG, which is contained in a differentially pumped vacuum housing, to facilitate magnetic fringe field penetration, and establishing conditions for efficient trapping and detecting the ions in a cubic cell.
