In an attempt to apply some of the real and perceived advantages of quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry to elemental/isotopic mass analysis a prototype Inductively Coupled Plasma-Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer (ICP-ITMS) has been built with a linear quadrupole between the vacuum interface and the ion trap. Initial results show some promise for ICP-ITMS to be a useful technique. However two limitations are the charge capacity and dynamic range of the standard Finnigan ITMS.
