The gas-phase reactivity of the actinide series ions Th{sup +} and U{sup +} with methane and ethane were studied by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR/MS), using an Extrel (Waters) FTMS 2001-DT spectrometer. The metal ions were produced by laser desorption/ionization of pure metal pieces and the reagents were admitted to the instrument through a leak valve; argon, introduced through pulsed valves, was used for collisional cooling of the metal ions.
