Nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are of environmental concern because of their mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. They are found in both combustion emission particulate matter and ambient air but at much lower levels than other organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Since the nitro-PAH are much more toxic than most other substances in these types of sample, there is a need for a sensitive and specific method for the accurate determination of this class of compounds.
