A first measurement of the positive muon lifetime--to a precision of 16 parts per million (ppm)--has been performed with the FAST detector at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). The obtained result, compatible with the present world average and of comparable precision, is {tau}{sub {mu}{sup +}} = 2.197 083 (32) (15) {mu}s, the first error being statistical and the second systematic. The Fermi coupling constant G{sub F}, derived from the reported measurement of the muon lifetime, is G{sub F} = [1.166353 (9)]x10{sup -5} GeV{sup -2}.
