A field test of NAPL mobilization and removal by cosolvent injection

This paper briefly describes the setup of a pilot scale field test of NAPL removal using miscible cosolvents being conducted at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. Petroleum hydrocarbons and spent solvents are present in the subsurface in the form of a nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL). Due to water table fluctuations, the NAPL is now present in a 2-3m thick {open_quotes}smear zone{close_quotes}. While the bulk of the NAPL is trapped at residual saturations in the formation, free phase NAPL has been observed in some wells at the site. The field experiment is being performed in a 3m by 5m confined test cell, located in the vicinity of a chemical disposal pit, and it involves the injection and subsequent extraction of several thousand gallons of a mixture of high molecular weight alcohols. This mixture was chosen because of its ability to mobilize and remove the NAPL, and because the concentrated field test effluent can be burned as a fuel in an incinerator.
