Title: Design, Construction and Magnetic Measurements of the HU640 (OPHELIE2) Undulator dedicated to the DESIRS VUV Beamline at SOLEIL

Abstract

A novel electromagnetic Insertion Device (ID) called HU640 (OPHELIE2) has been developed and constructed for the DESIRS beam line at SOLEIL. It is a 10 m-long helical/planar undulator designed to produce any kind of switchable photon polarizations in the range 5 eV - 40 eV. It is composed of three sets of pure air coils mounted in a special arrangment. One set coils is dedicated to generate the horizontal field component. Two other sets, shifted the one from the other by a quarter of period along the ID axis, produce the vertical component with a continuous translation dephasing varying from -180 deg. to +180 deg. . The use of non magnetic material makes the undulator linear with the coil current in terms of peak field and residual integrated field errors. This allows the number of magnetic controls, corrections to be significantly reduced and to ease the on-beam operation. The paper presents the design, the construction and the magnetic measurements of the undulator.

  • A planar undulator beamline, BL-13A, covering 30-1,000 eV has been constructed in the Photon Factory. The main scientific targets are investigations of organic thin films and biomolecules adsorbed on well-defined surfaces using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. A variable-included-angle Monk-Gillieson mounting monochromator with varied-line-spacing plane gratings is used to achieve a high photon flux of 10{sup 10}-10{sup 12} photons/s with a high resolution (E/{Delta}E) of 7,000-30,000. A typical spot size on the sample position is estimated to be 130 {mu}m (horizontal)x40 {mu}m (vertical). After commissioning, BL-13A will be open for users from January 2010.
  • The design considerations and technical details for components of the front end of a Photon Factory 53-pole wiggler/undulator beamline are described. Special attention is paid to the handling of the high-power densities produced by the wiggler.
  • The objectives of this project is install at the 2.75 GeV SOLEIL synchrotron radiation source a calibration and metrology test facility for the R and D of optical components and detectors.   • A new VUV beamline at the Photon Factory ring that is designed to accept radiation emitted from an undulator is described. The characteristics of the undulator and all parts of the beamline; a front end, a mirror system, and two monochromators, are described in detail. The characteristics of optical elements in the beamline are also shown.
  • An in-vacuum type undulator and its beamline NE3 with a Si(111) double-crystal monochromator is under commissioning. Spectra of synchrotron radiation measured in the energy range of 5--25 keV from the undulator shows a very good agreement with theoretical calculation. Some experiments of resonant nuclear scattering using {sup 57}Fe have been carried out using the third harmonics of the spectra. It has been proved that the undulator x rays are quite suitable for experiments of very small scattering cross sections.
