A new ternary borate oxide, cesium barium borate, CsBaB{sub 3}O{sub 6}, has been synthesized by solid-state reaction at 700 deg. C, and the single crystals were grown using CsF as a flux. The crystal structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the trigonal space group P321 with a cell of dimensions a=12.469(3)A, c=7.444(3)A, {alpha}=90.00{sup o}, {gamma}=120.00{sup o}, V=1002.3(5)A{sup 3}, Z=6. The fundamental building units of CsBaB{sub 3}O{sub 6} are the B{sub 3}O{sub 6} plane hexagonal rings, which are parallel to each other and stack along the c-axis, and the Cs and Ba atoms alternately occupy sites between the B{sub 3}O{sub 6} sheets. A comparison of the structures of CsBaB{sub 3}O{sub 6}, {beta}-BaB{sub 2}O{sub 4} and CsBO{sub 2} is presented. - Graphical abstract: A new ternary borate oxide, cesium barium borate, CsBaB{sub 3}O{sub 6} has been synthesized. The structure can be viewed as layer-like structure, which is made up of B{sub 3}O{sub 6} plane hexagonal rings stacking along the c-axis, with the Cs and Ba atoms alternately occupying sites between the B{sub 3}O{sub 6} sheets.
