Higher codimension and Gauss-Bonnet branes: an overview
- Department of Physics and CTS, IIT Kharagpur, 721 302 (India)
The Randall-Sundrum (RS) braneworld models are constructed using a five dimensional bulk, with one or more codimension-one branes. In this brief article, we deal with two kinds of extensions of the RS models. First, we look at models where we have branes of codimension greater than one. The simplest of such higher codimension models is the one in which the bulk is six dimensional. Two varieties of such six dimensional models exist- (i) a bulk with four-branes, with a compact on-brane coordinate -the so-called hybrid compactification scenario and (ii) a genuine three-brane in six dimensions-a higher dimensional extension of the idea of a cosmic string in four dimensions. Both varieties are discussed with particular reference to some recent work on models with bulk matter (eg, scalar, Maxwell etc.) and the issue of localisation of fields on the brane. Next, we revisit the five dimensional RS model but with the Gauss-Bonnet term added to the bulk action. The resulting changes are reviewed. We conclude by pointing out possibilities on obtaining newer bulk solutions and corrections to results in experimentally observable high energy processes, which are expected to occur if we include the GB term.
