Two university consortiums and their goals are briefly described in this paper. The Integrated Petroleum Environmental Consortium (IPEC) was formed to increase the competitiveness of the domestic petroleum industry through a reduction int he costs of compliance with environmental regulations. The Waste-management Education and Research Consortium (WERC) was established under a cooperative agreement with the US Department of Energy to expand the nation`s capacity to address waste management issues through education, technology development, and technology transfer. IPEC and WERC have formed a partnership called the South-central Research Alliance to promote collaboration between the two consortia.
