An investigation was undertaken of the products and the yield of biphenyl from the dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) resulting from the Base Catalyzed Decomposition (BCD) reaction. One objective of the investigation was to determine the conditions under which complete hydrodechlorination of PCBs can occur at 340 C or lower in two hours or less. A second objective was to isolate and identify products in the BCD reaction mixture. A number of new hydrogen donors were introduced in the BCD reaction. One reaction mechanism pathway was discovered, and its use led to hydrogen radical donor-acceptor transfer-donor reaction. This process is capable of preserving some of the hydrogen radicals generated via use of classes of compounds which were converted to the dihydroclass, which then became donors. A new catalyst was found to be effective in this hydrodechlorination of PCBs.
