Effects of moisture and chemical properties on the sorption of chlorinated solvents in a sandy loam soil

In this study, the sorption of five chlorinated solvents (1,2-dichloroethane; 1,1,1-trichlorethane; chloroform; trichloroethene; and carbon tetrachloride) onto Adelphia soil was investigated at several moisture contents. A semi-empirical model for the predictive estimation of sorption was developed as a function of sorbent and chemical properties, as well as moisture content. As predicted, the sorption of chlorinated solvents onto the representative soil was strongly dependent on both moisture content and chemical properties of the solute. Adsorption isotherms for 1,2-dichloroethane progressed from a Type II BET isotherm at oven-dried conditions to a Type III BET isotherm at 10% residual saturation and beyond. At 4.3% residual saturation, the adsorption isotherms for 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,1,1-trichloroethane still resemble Type II BET isotherms, while those for chloroform and carbon tetrachloride are of the Type III classification. While Type II BET isotherms indicate strong interaction between the sorbent and sorbate, Type III isotherms result from weak sorbent-sorbate interactions. The relative strength of the interactions at a given moisture content are directly related to the dipole moment of the sorbate.
