Phoenix Ash Technology{reg_sign} (PAT{reg_sign}) is a patented process for the encapsulation of hazardous, nuclear and mixed waste in Type C flyash, typically with significant volume reduction, high load-bearing strength, and greatly reduced leachability and permeability. The process, which is conducted at ambient temperatures, exploits the pozzolanic properties of the flyash binding the waste and flyash into a robust waste form which can be shaped to meet disposal requirements. The Clemson Technical Center has conducted a proof-of-process demonstration of the PAT{reg_sign} process for the solidification of nitrate (and other) salt wastes, typical of those found within the DOE. The results of this technology demonstration, including extensive physical (unconfined compressive strength, thermal cycling and immersion testing) and chemical (TCLP and ANSI/ANS-1 6.1 Leachability Testing) evaluation of the product waste forms will be described.
