In this study, batch-type washing with three chelating agents (EDTA, NTA, and DTPA) was employed for the treatment of sandy soils artificially contaminated by lead, cadmium, and copper separately. The effectiveness of each chelant solution for washing such soils was then evaluated. The effect of pH on washing effectiveness was determined as well. Based on the experimental results, it was concluded that a greater removal efficiency will be obtained if the chelant-heavy metal system is in an acidic environment. Also, it was found that there is an optimum molar ratio for each chelant/heavy metal system. Below this ratio, the removal efficiency of heavy metal will increase with the increasing chelant concentration in the system. Above this ratio, a negative effect might result in a lower removal efficiency of heavy metal.
