Effective action of softly broken supersymmetric theories
Abstract
We study the renormalization of (softly) broken supersymmetric theories at the one loop level in detail. We perform this analysis in a superspace approach in which the supersymmetry breaking interactions are parametrized using spurion insertions. We comment on the uniqueness of this parametrization. We compute the one loop renormalization of such theories by calculating superspace vacuum graphs with multiple spurion insertions. To perform this computation efficiently we develop algebraic properties of spurion operators, that naturally arise because the spurions are often surrounded by superspace projection operators. Our results are general apart from the restrictions that higher super covariant derivative terms and some finite effects due to noncommutativity of superfield dependent mass matrices are ignored. One of the soft potentials induces renormalization of the Kaehler potential.

We study the duality cascade of softly broken supersymmetric theories. We investigate the renormalization group (RG) flow of SUSY breaking terms as well as supersymmetric couplings. It is found that the magnitudes of SUSY breaking terms are suppressed in most regimes of the RG flow through the duality cascade. At one stage of cascading, the gaugino mass of the strongly coupled sector and scalar masses converge to certain values, which are determined by the gauge coupling and the gaugino mass of the weakly coupled sector. At the next stage, the strongly and weakly coupled sectors are interchanged with each other.more »

Softly Broken Supersymmetric Desert from Orbifold Compactification
A new viewpoint for the gauge hierarchy problem is proposed: compactification at a large scale, 1/R, leads to a low energy effective theory with supersymmetry softly broken at a much lower scale, \alpha/R. The hierarchy is induced by an extremely small angle \alpha which appears in the orbifold compactification boundary conditions. The same orbifold boundary conditions break PecceiQuinn symmetry, leading to a new solution to the \mu problem. Explicit 5d theories are constructed with gauge groups SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1) and SU(5), with matter in the bulk or on the brane, which lead to the (nextto) minimal supersymmetric standardmore »
Application of a softly broken supersymmetric model to the properties of the scalar neutrino
We describe a simple, softly broken supersymmetric model of electroweak interactions. In its simplest form, supersymmetry breaking is imposed via explicit mass terms for scalar quarks and leptons. We apply this model to the discussion of the decay properties of the scalar neutrino ..nu../sub s/. The oneloop process ..nu../sub s/..> nu..+gammatilde (gammatilde = photino) is computed as well as multibody (treelevel) decays of the ..nu../sub s/. The relative branching ratios are crucial for determining the phenomenological signatures of the scalar neutrino. Complications to the model due to Majorana mass terms for the gauge fermions are discussed. Explicit Feynman rules formore »
Spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry and the effective action in supersymmetric KaluzaKlein theories and strings
A general expression is derived for the effective action, represented as an expansion in powers of the curvature, for an arbitrary supersymmetric KaluzaKlein theory with either broken or unbroken supersymmetry on the background R/sub n/ x T/sub d//sub //sub n/, where R/sub n/ is an ndimensional curved space and T/sub d/ is a ddimensional torus. Use is made of a supersymmetry breaking mechanism which consists in choosing different boundary conditions on the torus for fields belonging to the same supermultiplet. The first few terms in the expansion of the effective action for N = 1,2, d = 4; N =more »
Geometrical interpretation of the functional measure for supersymmetric gauge theories and of the gauge invariant effective action
A geometrical treatment of the functional integral measure for supersymmetric gauge theories is given. (Results for normal gauge theories follow as a special case). A detailed discussion of the local geometry of the superspace of fields is presented, and it is shown how the volume element of the field space is related to the usual FaddeevPopov prescription for the path integral quantization of gauge theories. The authors present a derivation of the supersymmetric generalization of the connection introduced originally by Vilkovisky in his construction of the effective action. This connection is used to construct an effective action which is covariantmore »
