Even-odd effects in the ionization cross sections of [C{sub 60}]{sub 2} and [C{sub 60}C{sub 70}] dimers

We report strong even-odd effects in multiple ionization yields of van der Waals dimers in slow Xe{sup 30+}+[C{sub 60}]{sub 2}([C{sub 60}C{sub 70}]){yields}{center_dot}{center_dot}{center_dot}+[C{sub 60}]{sub 2}{sup r+}([C{sub 60}C{sub 70}]{sup r+}) electron-transfer collisions as functions of r{<=}7. This behavior may be due to even-odd variations in the sequences of dimer ionization energies as calculated with an electrostatic model including an electrical fullerene-fullerene contact at the 19a{sub 0} center-center separation in [C{sub 60}]{sub 2}{sup +}. Prompt dissociations predominantly yield intact fullerenes [C{sub 60}]{sub 2}{sup r+}{yields}C{sub 60}{sup r{sub 1}+}+C{sub 60}{sup r{sub 2}+} in the same (r{sub 1}=r{sub 2}, even r) or nearby (r{sub 1}=r{sub 2}{+-}1, odd r>1) charge states.
