Photoluminescence, absorption and excitation spectra of K{sub 2}LiAlF{sub 6} single crystals doped with 1% of Cr{sup 3+} are presented. The near-infrared photoluminescence observed at room temperature, 77 and 4 K are attributed to the zero-phonon spin-allowed {sup 4} T {sub 2}({sup 4} F){sup {yields}} {sup 4} A {sub 2}({sup 4} F) transition of Cr{sup 3+} octahedrally coordinated by F{sup -} ions. Lifetimes are obtained. The 4 K emission broad band was described in terms of normal modes of the octahedral complex [CrF{sub 6}]{sup 3-}. The Racah, crystal-field and Huang-Rhys parameters are calculated and the quantum efficiency and thermal quenching estimated and compared with Cr{sup 3+} properties in different environments. - Graphical abstract: Photoluminescence spectra of K{sub 2}LiAlF{sub 6} doped with 1.0 at% Cr{sup 3+} at: (a) room temperature (300 K), (b) 77 K and (c) 4 K.
