Phase transitions in quasi-one-dimensional chalcogenides of BaNb{sub x}S{sub 3} and BaTa{sub x}Se{sub 3}

Journal Article · · Materials Research Bulletin
BaNbS{sub 3} phase was found to be stable in the composition range between x=0.85 and 0.97 for BaNb{sub x}S{sub 3}. The conduction nature was varied from semiconductive to metallic with increasing Nb content. Semiconductor-to-metal (S-M) transition was observed at {approx}170 and {approx}250 K in BaNb{sub 0.95}S{sub 3} and BaNb{sub 0.97}S{sub 3}, respectively. BaTaSe{sub 3} phase was stable in the range between x=0.90 and 0.95 for BaTa{sub x}Se{sub 3}. BaTa{sub x}Se{sub 3} with x=0.90 and 0.95 showed a semiconductor-to-semiconductor transition at {approx}140 K, which is characterized by a large jump of the resistivity from {approx}10{sup 6} to {approx}10{sup 12} {omega} cm. Seebeck measurements showed electron conduction in both BaNb{sub x}S{sub 3} and BaTa{sub x}Se{sub 3}.
