Shock-Wave Synthesis and HPHT Sintering of Cubic Silicon Nitride

We have used the shock-wave method to synthesize the high-pressure cubic phase of silicon nitride. To consolidate the received nano-powder into the bulk sample, the special high-quality HPHT apparatus was used. As a result, we have obtained bulk samples of cubic silicon nitride up to 6 mm in size. The Vickers microhardness of this superhard material equals 30-50 GPa, which significantly exceeds the data in other investigations.
